Speaker 1:

Hi, I'm Heidi Bilesma-Emperson. Today I'm going to be focused of our mind renewal tools, called the Scripture Word Focus Tool. So I'm going to take one word at a time of this passage and emphasize it and see how it affects my understanding of the passage. Oh, taste. I'm going to start with taste. Lord, would you show me the impact that your word choice of the word taste, what it means in this context? Thank you, taste it's something that you kind of are tentative about sometimes and it's something that is kind of an adventure, an experiment of sorts. So, taste and see that the Lord is good. I am to dare to taste, they say, and so I love that God chose this word see to be in this passage because what it does is. It helps me to realize that he wants me to see, not just taste, not just dare to experiment, but to see. And what is it that he wants me to taste and see?

Speaker 1:

This phrase that the Lord is good, that the Lord, the Lord, is good. There's so much we could unpack in that passage, but the Lord is good. Good when I think of foods that I've tasted and have said this is good, it's pleasing to me, it satisfies me, the experiment is worth it. And so God wants us to see and taste that he is good. Good, what does goodness even mean? That through and through there is purity of heart, there is perfection, there is totality of beauty. And see that the Lord is good. He is good, he is good. It's not just. Maybe Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him, blessed, blessed is the man. So I can experience blessing in my life. And how do I do that? By taking refuge in the Lord. I can experience blessing in my life by tasting and seeing that he is good and then hiding myself in that goodness, hiding myself in him.

Speaker 1:

One of the other things that strikes me about this verse is that it is pretty upbeat. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. It's upbeat, all right, but there is an undertone that bears note. Eagerly, almost exuberantly, the psalmist tells us to taste and see that the Lord is good. Vigorously, almost exuberantly, the psalmist tells us to taste and see that the Lord is good. But the second part of the verse tells us that the person who takes refuge in the Lord is blessed. And I just consider for a moment the implications of this section of the verse. Why would I need, or why would anyone need, to take refuge at all?

Speaker 1:

Refuge is looking for a place of safety. So clearly. This implies that there are times when we might feel threatened in some way. This implies that there are times when we might feel threatened in some way. And so these positive, excited exclamations of trust and awe of the Lord are in the context of feeling unsafe. With my sanctified imagination, I picture running from danger and running not to food, not to a false comfort or counterfeit behavior, but to my strong tower, to my God, who I have tasted and who I have seen that he is good. I am blessed as I take refuge in him. Lord, I know that you see all that I face. You know that trials have come my way. Some have stayed longer than others and some are just around the next corner. Lord, I want to taste and see that you are good even in those hard times, and I, when I feel the slightest bit of uneasiness, I will take refuge in you. Thank you, lord, that you bless me.
