Speaker 1:

Hi, this is Heidi Bilesma-Epperson, and today I'm doing mind renewal meditation about expecting great things of God. Lord, I want to surrender my expectations of others. I know that others can't meet the needs in my heart. To expect great things of other people is to almost guarantee disappointment. It's not really very fair and, lord, I know that I have a tendency to expect great things of myself as well, and then I have a standard for myself that you don't even have for me. My perfectionism, lord, is really a thorn in my own side. But, god, I want to surrender all of my expectations to you and focus any expectations that I have on you. You are the only one who is worthy of my expectation.

Speaker 1:

Your word says in Isaiah 40, yes, the sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes. Lord, I love that Christmas is a time where we celebrate your advent, that you came to the earth and you chose to take on flesh, lord, your word further says in Isaiah 40, verse 11, that you will feed your flock like a shepherd. You will carry the lambs in your arms, holding them close to your heart. That you will gently lead the mother sheep with their young Lord, these are all things that I can expect of you. Oh, how it changes the way I live my life when I turn my expectations away from others, when I turn my expectations away from people and away from my bank account and away from who knows what myself, and instead turn it to you from my bank account and away from who knows what myself, and instead turn it to you. When my expectations are resting in you and allowing you to be who you want to be in my life, then I'm not disappointed.

Speaker 1:

Lord, your word goes on in verse 12 of Isaiah 40 and says who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale? Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord? Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him? Has the Lord ever needed anyone's advice? Does he need instruction about what is good? Did someone teach him what is right or show him the path of justice? Oh, lord, these are all questions that have the answer. No, no one else, just you. You are the only one who has done any of these amazing things.

Speaker 1:

Verse 15, no, for all the nations of the world are but a drop in the bucket. They are nothing more than dust on the scales. You, god, pick up the whole earth as though it were a grain of sand. Verse 26 says look, look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? You, lord. You bring them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name.

Speaker 1:

Because of your great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. All of my expectations that I could place in others or in circumstances, or in my bank account, or in any number of things, none of them merit putting my hope in. Only you, god. Verses 28 through 31. Have you never heard, have you never understood the Lord?

Speaker 1:

The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of all the earth, and he never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Oh God, thank you. Thank you that in this season, at this time of year Christmas I can put all my focus on you, lord. I thank you that I can expect great things of you, not just now, but always. You will never disappoint. You are my great king and god. You alone can fulfill all my expectations. Thank you, jesus.
